দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় আফ্রিকার সাহারা মরুভূমিতে একটি বিমান ভেঙে পড়ে।
যাত্রীরা সবাই মারা গেলেও আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে পাইলট প্রাণে বেঁচে যায়। চারপাশে
শুধু ধু ধু বালু আর আগুন ঝরা রোদ। খাবার নেই, পানি নেই, আশ্রয় নেই — সম্বল
বলতে কিছু শুকনো বিস্কুট আর এক বোতল পানি!

তিনদিন পর বোতলের পানি শেষ হয়ে গেল। সূর্যের তাপ, পানির অভাব এবং নিঃসঙ্গতা
— সব মিলিয়ে পাইলট একদম নিঃশেষ, মৃতপ্রায়। তখন তার মনে পড়ে, সে পাইলট
হবার আগে ছিল একজন চিত্রশিল্পী! পকেটে পেন্সিল ছিল, সাথে একটা ভাঙা চশমা।
মরুভূমির বালুতে সে আঁকা শুরু করল — তার পরিবার, প্রিয়জন, তার শহরের
রাস্তা, ঘরবাড়ি, গাছপালা!

সে জানত, সে মরবে। কিন্তু মৃত্যুর আগে সে তার স্মৃতি ধরে রাখতে চায়।
আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে ছবি আঁকার সময় পাইলট অনুভব করে, তার তৃষ্ণা খানিকটা কমে
গেছে, মনটাও শান্ত হয়েছে। সে ভাবল, আমি এখনও বেঁচে আছি। যতক্ষণ আমি স্বপ্ন
দেখতে পারি, ততক্ষণ আমি হারিনি!

অষ্টম দিনে এক ফরাসি উদ্ধারকারী দল তাকে খুঁজে পায়। তারা অবাক হয়ে দেখে —
শরীর দুর্বল, চোখের নিচে কালি, ঠোঁট ফেটে গেছে, কিন্তু বালিতে ছবি আঁকছে এক
পাইলট — যেন কোনো এক জাদুকর!

উদ্ধারের পরে সেই পাইলট বলেছিল, “আমি টিকে ছিলাম, কারণ আমি বিশ্বাস
করেছিলাম। আমার চোখের ভাঙা চশমা আর হাতের পেন্সিল আমাকে মরুভূমিতেও বাঁচিয়ে
রেখেছিল।”
